Repair or replace?

Most stone chips can be repaired if they are small and not right in front of the driver. As a general industry guide, used by many repairers and insurers:

A repair injects clear resin into the chip, which is then cured with UV light. It stops the chip spreading and usually makes it much less visible. It typically takes around 30 minutes.

Is it covered by insurance?

Many fully comprehensive policies include glass cover, and some insurers repair chips without charging an excess or affecting your no-claims discount. Check your policy before you book.

Windscreens and the MOT

Damage in the area in front of the driver larger than 10 mm, or larger than 40 mm elsewhere in the swept area, can fail the MOT. Getting a chip fixed early is usually cheaper than a new windscreen.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a chip repair take?

Usually about 30 minutes, and you can normally drive straight away.

Will the chip disappear completely?

Not always. A repair stops the damage spreading and usually makes it much less noticeable, but a faint mark can remain.

Can a crack be repaired?

Generally no. Once a chip has spread into a crack, the windscreen usually needs replacing.

Do I need to recalibrate cameras after a new windscreen?

Many modern cars have cameras behind the windscreen for lane-keeping and emergency braking (ADAS). After a replacement these often need recalibration. A chip repair doesn't usually need it.

Is this service free to use?
