Lawn care calendar for UK gardens
Updated September 2026

Spring (March to May)
Start mowing when the grass begins growing, with the blades set high. Rake out moss and dead grass, and apply a spring lawn feed once growth is steady.
Summer (June to August)
Mow weekly, and raise the blades in dry spells so the grass copes better with drought. Brown patches in a dry summer usually recover when it rains.
Autumn (September to November)
This is the best time to scarify, aerate and overseed thin patches. Use an autumn feed, which is lower in nitrogen. Keep leaves off the lawn.
Winter (December to February)
Keep off frozen or waterlogged grass. Service the mower ready for spring.
