What a gardener can do

What affects the price

Most gardeners charge by the hour or by the job. The size of the garden, how overgrown it is, access, and whether green waste needs taking away all make a difference. Regular visits often cost less per visit than one-off jobs. Ask whether waste removal is included.

Nesting birds and hedges

It is an offence to damage or destroy an active bird's nest. The main nesting season is roughly March to August. A good gardener will check a hedge before cutting it during that time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a gardener cost?

Most gardeners charge by the hour or give a fixed price for the job. It depends on the garden's size and condition and whether waste needs taking away. You'll get a price before any work starts.

How often should my lawn be cut?

In the main growing season (roughly April to September) most lawns need cutting weekly or fortnightly. Less often in spring and autumn, and rarely in winter.

Do gardeners take the waste away?

Many do, sometimes for an extra charge, or they can use your garden waste bin. Ask when you get a quote.

When can hedges be cut?

Hedges can be trimmed at any time, but take care in the nesting season (roughly March to August), when active nests must not be disturbed.

Is this service free to use?
