Is Cat Meat Halal? What Islamic Scholars Say
Short answer: most scholars consider eating cat meat impermissible. This is a brief overview, not a fatwa, so please ask a scholar you trust for a ruling.
Why most scholars say no
Classical scholars generally listed cats among animals whose meat is not to be eaten. A reason often given is that cats are carnivorous predators. A small number of scholars in some schools recorded a more lenient view, so you may see differences if you read widely.
Keeping a cat is a different question
Whether you can eat an animal and whether you can keep it as a companion are separate matters. Cats are widely loved in Islamic tradition, and keeping one is permissible. See cats in Islam and keeping cats as pets.
What this means for the food you buy
Because the question is about eating, not feeding, it does not decide what your cat should eat. For that, see do cats need to eat halal food?
