Frequently asked

Questions you might have

Everything about the service, the Islamic basis, pricing, and what happens to your books.

The Islamic basis

Is this Islamically permissible?

Yes. Burying old, damaged, or unusable religious texts in a clean, private location is the most widely accepted method across Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools of thought. The principle is that anything bearing the name of Allah or verses of the Qur'an must not be degraded, walked on, or thrown in with ordinary waste. Burial fulfils this duty of ihtiram (respect).

Other classical opinions permit washing the ink off pages and letting them flow with clean water, or — as a last resort and carefully — burning. Burial is the most accessible and safest option for most families.

Why shouldn't I just throw them away or recycle them?

Ordinary rubbish collection and recycling streams treat paper with no regard for what's printed on it. Pages are shredded, soaked, mixed, and trampled. For materials that contain the name of Allah or verses of the Qur'an, this is considered disrespectful in nearly every school of thought. Burial ensures the text is laid to rest cleanly and is not walked over.

Can I bury them myself in my garden?

You can, and many families do. The Islamic requirements are: a clean location, no footfall over the burial site, and sufficient depth that the material is not disturbed (typically at least 3 feet). The reasons people use our service instead are privacy (gardens get landscaped, dug up, or sold), practicality (digging deep enough is real work), and scale (loft clear-outs often exceed what a back garden can reasonably take).

What you can send

What can I send?

Paper-based Islamic literature only. Specifically:

  • Qurans (complete or partial, printed or handwritten)
  • Hadith collections, tafsir, du'a and prayer booklets
  • Islamic schoolbooks and madrasa workbooks
  • Torn or loose pages with Arabic verses
  • Printed wedding/Eid cards bearing the name of Allah or Qur'anic verses
  • Laminated prayer timetables and posters with verses

If it's paper and bears the name of Allah, the Messenger ﷺ, or Qur'anic verses — it qualifies.

What DON'T you accept?

To keep the service focused, affordable, and Islamically clean, we only bury paper literature. We do not accept:

  • CDs, DVDs, cassettes, USB sticks, hard drives or any digital/electronic media
  • Tasbih beads, prayer mats, prayer beads, caps, or clothing
  • Ornaments, figurines, wall art with heavy frames or glass
  • Toys or children's religious-themed decorative items
  • Anything with batteries, electronics, plastic casing, metal, or glass

If you're not sure whether something qualifies, ask us first. Parcels containing non-accepted items will have those items returned to you at cost.

What about wedding cards, magazines, or posters with Islamic text?

Yes — as long as they are paper-based. A printed wedding card, magazine cover, or poster bearing the name of Allah or Qur'anic verses qualifies. Glass-framed or heavily-mounted versions do not.

Do I need to wrap them specially before posting?

No. Just pack firmly so nothing is damaged in transit — a sturdy box with bubble wrap or kraft paper is enough. If you wish to wrap each book in a clean cloth first, that's a beautiful touch but not required. We shroud items on arrival before storage.

What happens to non-religious items you find in my parcel?

We separate them and either return them at cost or — if you tell us on the order notes — dispose of them ordinarily. Nothing is sold, photographed, or shared.

Pricing & shipping

How is the price worked out?

£7 per order (covers handling and admin) plus £8 per kg (covers burial, plot donation, labour). The minimum is £10. Above 5kg, the per-kg rate drops to £5/kg — useful for masajid and schools clearing storerooms.

A typical family parcel of 0.8kg costs £13.40. A mosque sending 10kg pays £72.

Do I pay for shipping too?

Yes. The price covers burial and handling only. You post the parcel to us at your own cost. For a typical home parcel, Royal Mail Tracked 48 is around £4–£7 and takes 2–3 working days. We'll email the postal address immediately after payment.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. The price you see is the price you pay. We don't invoice afterwards, and we don't surcharge for awkward contents (unless you include bricks, in which case we'll have a conversation).

Can I pay in instalments?

For large bulk orders over £100 (typically mosques), we can arrange an invoice with split payment. Contact us directly.

The process

How long until my books are buried?

We pool burials twice a year. Depending on when we receive your parcel, burial may take place anywhere from 1 week to 6 months later. Your items are stored cleanly and respectfully off the floor in a dedicated, secure facility in the meantime.

Can I attend the burial?

For private reasons around the partner cemeteries, we don't host public attendance. If you have a specific wish (e.g., a du'a read at the burial), tell us in the order notes and we'll honour it.

Do you accept international parcels?

Currently UK only. International senders face customs complications that significantly raise costs for everyone. We're watching the demand; if this changes, we'll update this page.

What if my parcel is lost in the post?

We strongly recommend Royal Mail Tracked 48 (or equivalent). If a tracked parcel goes missing en route, you'll claim compensation from the courier. If your parcel arrives damaged, we still bury whatever is recoverable and let you know what was received.

Can I cancel or get a refund?

Before we've received your parcel, yes — full refund, minus Stripe fees. Once the parcel has arrived and been catalogued, refunds aren't possible because the burial process has begun. See our refund policy for details.

For mosques, schools, and bulk senders

We're a masjid with decades of old Qurans. Can you help?

Yes — this is one of the best uses of the service. For bulk orders over 10kg we can arrange pallet collection across much of the UK (collection cost quoted separately). Contact us with your postcode and rough volume for a tailored quote.

Do you offer invoices for institutions?

Yes, we issue VAT-compliant invoices for mosques, charities, schools, and community centres. Pay by bank transfer or card.
