Shopify, Wix or WordPress: which suits a local business?

Updated October 2026

The right platform depends on one question: do you want to sell online?

Shopify: best if you sell products or gift cards

Shopify is built for selling. It takes card payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay, tracks stock, prints delivery labels and lets you run the shop from your phone. It suits clothing and grocery shops, bakeries, takeaways selling gift cards, and anyone who wants to sell beyond Dewsbury. There's a monthly fee plus card fees, and you can start with a free trial.

WordPress: best for a flexible business website

WordPress powers a huge share of the web. It's ideal for service businesses (barbers, garages, tutors, trades) that want pages for services, prices and bookings. It needs good hosting: we use Zume Hosting for fast UK hosting, and SiteGround is another reliable option.

Wix: easy, but you do the work

Wix is simple to start yourself and fine for a very small site. The catch is time: you'll need to keep it updated, and moving away later can be awkward.
