Front driveway rules
Updated September 2026
In England, you don't need planning permission for a new or replacement front driveway of any size if it uses permeable (porous) surfacing, such as gravel, permeable block paving or porous asphalt, or if rainwater drains to a lawn or border.
If the surface is impermeable and covers more than 5 square metres, with water running onto the road, you do need permission.
Dropped kerbs
Driving over a pavement to reach your drive needs a dropped kerb, which you apply for through your council. Don't start work until it's approved.
Rules differ in Wales and Scotland. Check the Planning Portal or your council.
