How to choose a good pest controller

Updated September 2026

Pest control is not a licensed trade in the UK, so it's worth asking a few questions before you book.

  1. Are you trained? Look for the RSPH Level 2 Award in Pest Management or an equivalent qualification.
  2. Are you a member of a trade body? The BPCA and NPTA both set codes of practice for members.
  3. Do you have insurance? Public liability insurance protects you if something goes wrong.
  4. What's included in the price? Ask how many visits are included and whether proofing (blocking entry points) costs extra.
  5. What products will you use? They should explain any safety steps for children and pets.
  6. What if the problem comes back? Many offer a free revisit within a set period.
  7. Can I have it in writing? A written quote or confirmation by text or email avoids surprises.

Warning signs

Be careful of anyone who won't give a price before starting, pushes you to sign a long contract on the doorstep, or asks for full payment in cash before doing any work.
