The short answerMalaysia Airlines' direct UK flight to Kuala Lumpur leaves from London Heathrow, so from Manchester, Leeds Bradford or Birmingham you usually either travel to Heathrow first or take a one-stop flight with another airline from your regional airport. Compare the whole journey: travel to Heathrow, parking or transfers, and baggage rules if you use separate tickets.

  4. How to choose

If you live in the North or the Midlands, the best route to Kuala Lumpur depends on how much you value the shorter, direct flight against the journey to London. Here are your options.

Option 1: Travel to Heathrow and fly direct

Malaysia Airlines flies direct from London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur in about 13 hours. From Yorkshire, the Midlands or the North West you can reach Heathrow by car, coach, train or a pre-booked transfer. A direct flight often suits families and anyone travelling with a baby.

Getting to Heathrow from Yorkshire

From Dewsbury or Batley it is roughly 190 miles, about three hours by road. A pre-booked private transfer can take a family and luggage door to terminal; you can send a free enquiry for a Dewsbury to Heathrow taxi quote or a Batley to Heathrow taxi quote.

If you would rather drive and park, compare prices on Holiday Extras, APH and Airparks. For a trip of two to three weeks, pre-booked parking is usually much cheaper than turning up.

Option 2: One-stop flight from your regional airport

Several airlines fly from Manchester and Birmingham, and some from Leeds Bradford via a hub, connecting on to Kuala Lumpur through the Gulf, Turkey or other hubs. This avoids the trip to London but adds a connection. Check:

  • The total journey time, not just the first flight.
  • Whether it is one booking, so baggage is checked through and you are protected if you miss a connection.
  • The length of the layover.

Option 3: Domestic flight or train to London, then direct

If you book a short domestic flight or a train to London and then fly direct, think carefully about separate tickets. If the first leg is delayed and you miss the long-haul flight, you may lose the fare. Leave plenty of time, or book it as one journey.

From the North, the real choice is a longer journey to Heathrow or a connection on the way.
