Planning a first trip to a country on the other side of the world feels like a lot. This guide breaks it into the order you will actually do things in, so nothing gets missed. Each step links to a deeper guide when you want the detail.
Step 1: Choose when to go and how long for
Malaysia is hot and humid all year, so there is no bad season, only different weather on different coasts. The west coast (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi) is usually drier from roughly December to February, while the east coast islands such as Perhentian and Redang are generally best from about March to October and many close for the monsoon season. Two weeks is a comfortable first trip: a few days in Kuala Lumpur, then Penang and/or an island.

Step 2: Set a realistic budget
Many UK visitors find day-to-day costs in Malaysia, especially food, local transport and mid-range hotels, noticeably lower than at home. The flight is usually the biggest single cost. Use our pounds to ringgit converter to see everyday prices in pounds, and read how much a holiday to Malaysia costs from the UK.
Step 3: Book flights from London
Malaysia Airlines flies direct from London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur, which takes about 13 hours. Other airlines connect via the Gulf, Turkey or Singapore and can be cheaper but take longer. If you are travelling with a baby, read the Malaysia Airlines baby and infant rules before choosing seats. See how long the flight takes for what to expect on board.
Step 4: Sort entry rules and paperwork
UK citizens can normally enter Malaysia as tourists without a visa for up to 90 days, with a passport valid for at least six months. You must also complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online before you travel. Follow our guides to whether UK citizens need a visa and how to fill in the arrival card.
Rules change. Check GOV.UK Malaysia entry requirements and your airline before you book or fly.
Step 5: Book where you will stay
Book at least your first two or three nights before you fly, so you have an address for the arrival card and somewhere to go after a long journey. Kuala Lumpur has a huge range from budget hostels to five-star hotels; Penang's George Town is popular for heritage shophouses and food; Langkawi suits beach stays.
Step 6: Plan money, phone and safety
Cards are widely accepted in cities and malls, but carry some cash for street stalls, markets and small taxis. Get a local SIM or eSIM on arrival for cheap data. Malaysia is generally a welcoming, easy country for visitors, but use normal precautions: watch for bag snatching from passing motorbikes, use licensed taxis or Grab, and read the FCDO travel advice before you go. Public Wi-Fi is common, so a VPN is a sensible extra for banking.
Step 7: Pick your route
A classic first trip is Kuala Lumpur (Petronas Towers, Batu Caves, Chinatown), then the Cameron Highlands for tea plantations, George Town in Penang for street food, and finish on Langkawi's beaches. Food alone is a reason to go; start with our Malaysian food guide for first-timers.

There is no single best month because the two coasts have different seasons. The west coast is often best from December to February, and the east coast islands from about March to October.
Is Malaysia cheaper than the UK?
Many visitors find food, local transport and hotels noticeably cheaper than in the UK, although the flight is usually the largest cost.
Is Malaysia safe for UK tourists?
Malaysia is generally a welcoming destination, but take normal precautions against bag snatching and card fraud and read the FCDO travel advice, which warns against travel to some parts of eastern Sabah.
