How much do driving lessons cost?

Driving lesson prices vary a lot by area, instructor and lesson length. Prices are usually higher in London and the South East, and in busy cities, than in smaller towns. As a rough guide, many instructors charge somewhere between about £30 and £50 an hour, but always ask for a current price rather than relying on a guide.
What affects the price
- Where you live and how busy the roads are
- Lesson length: one hour, ninety minutes or two hours
- Automatic or manual: automatic lessons can cost a little more
- Block bookings: paying for 5 or 10 lessons upfront is often cheaper per hour
- Intensive courses: a set price for a package of lessons over a few days or weeks
Other costs to plan for
- Provisional licence application on GOV.UK
- Theory test fee and practical test fee, set by the DVSA (check GOV.UK for the current prices)
- Test day: some instructors charge for car hire and a lesson before the test
- Resits, if you need more than one attempt
Questions to ask before you pay
- How long is a lesson, and does the hour include time to drive to and from pick-up?
- What is the price for one lesson and for a block?
- What is the cancellation policy and how much notice do you need?
- Is the test-day car hire included or extra?
- Can I stop and get a refund on unused lessons?
Be careful with very large upfront payments. Paying for a small block first lets you check you are happy with the instructor before committing.
