The UK driving theory test explained

You must pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test. Book it on GOV.UK only: other websites may charge more for the same booking.
What the test has
- Multiple choice: 50 questions, and you need 43 or more correct to pass
- Hazard perception: 14 video clips with 15 developing hazards, and you need a score of 44 out of 75 to pass
You must pass both parts in the same sitting to pass the theory test.
How long your pass lasts
Your theory test pass certificate is valid for two years. If you have not passed your practical test within that time, you will need to take the theory test again.
How to prepare
- Read the Highway Code, which is free online
- Use the official DVSA revision and practice material
- Practise hazard perception clips, because the timing of your click matters
- Take practice tests until you pass them comfortably
On the day
Take your photocard licence and arrive early. If you have a disability, a learning difficulty or English is not your first language, you may be able to get extra support, so check GOV.UK when you book.
After you pass
Your instructor can help you decide when to book your practical test. Book it when you are consistently driving at test standard, not just when you can first get a date.
