What we can help with
- Beginner lessons: no experience needed, and you don't need a car
- Automatic and manual lessons
- Intensive courses: a lot of lessons in a short time
- Refresher lessons for people who have passed but lost confidence, or are new to the UK
- Test preparation and mock tests
Before your first lesson
You need a provisional driving licence, which you can apply for on GOV.UK from the age of 15 years and 9 months. You can start lessons once you are old enough to drive, usually 17. Ask your instructor about their prices, how long lessons last, and what happens if you cancel.
Choosing an instructor
Qualified instructors should display a green badge (fully qualified) or a pink badge (trainee) in the car windscreen. Check that it is current and that the name matches the instructor. Our guide to choosing a driving instructor explains what else to look for.
Planning your costs
Lesson prices vary by area and instructor. Our guide to driving lesson costs shows what to ask for and how block bookings work.

Frequently asked questions
How many driving lessons will I need?
It depends on you. DVSA figures suggest learners need around 45 hours of lessons with an instructor plus about 22 hours of private practice, but some people need fewer and some need more.
Do I need a car to start?
No. Your instructor provides a dual-controlled car for lessons. You only need a car if you also want to practise privately with a family member or friend.
Can I learn in an automatic?
Yes. If you pass your test in an automatic, your licence only covers automatic cars. If you pass in a manual, you can drive both.
How do I book my theory and driving tests?
Book through GOV.UK only. Other sites may charge extra for the same service.
Is this service free?
Yes. Sending an enquiry is free and there is no obligation to book lessons.
