How many driving lessons will I need?

There is no set number. The DVSA, which runs the driving test, says learners need on average around 45 hours of lessons with an instructor plus about 22 hours of private practice. That is a guide only. Some people pass with far fewer hours and others need more.
What affects the number of lessons
- Age and confidence: some learners progress faster with regular practice
- How often you have lessons: weekly lessons with gaps often need revision, so a steady routine helps
- Private practice: time in a family car between lessons reduces the lessons you need
- Where you live: busy cities, roundabouts and complex junctions take more practice
- Automatic or manual: automatics remove gear changes, which many learners find easier
How to know you are ready
Your instructor should tell you when you are close. A good sign is driving a full route with few prompts from them, and handling junctions, roundabouts and parking confidently. Ask for a mock test to see where you stand.
Making your lessons count
- Book regular lessons rather than long gaps
- Practise what you learned between lessons, with a suitable supervising driver and proper insurance
- Pass your theory test early so you are ready to book your practical when your instructor says so
- Tell your instructor what you find hardest, so lesson time is spent where it helps most
