Missed connecting flight: can you claim?

Updated 5 November 2026 · General information, not legal advice.

Quick answerIf you miss a connection because your first flight was late and both flights were on one booking, the delay to your final destination is what counts for compensation. If you booked the flights separately, your rights are usually weaker. Keep your booking and all messages.

One booking or two?

On a single booking, the airline is generally responsible for getting you to your final destination. On separate bookings, a missed second flight is usually your risk, so check what you booked.

What to do

  1. Speak to the airline at the airport and ask to be re-booked.
  2. Note your actual arrival time at your final destination.
  3. Keep receipts for meals or a hotel.
  4. Claim using the claim steps.
