HMC-Certified Cat Food: What It Means and Why It Matters
“Halal” on a label can mean very different things depending on who’s certifying it. If you want real confidence in what your cat is eating, it’s worth knowing why HMC certification is widely regarded as the gold standard in the UK.
Who are HMC?
The Halal Monitoring Committee is a UK certification body known for its strict, hands-on approach. Rather than auditing once a year and trusting the rest, HMC is known for continuous, on-site monitoring of the production process.
What HMC actually checks
- Source — that animals are from approved halal supply chains.
- Slaughter — that the method meets a rigorous halal standard.
- Processing — that there’s no cross-contamination with non-halal products.
- Traceability — that the whole chain can be documented and verified.
How it differs from a self-declared “halal” label
Anyone can print the word halal. Independent certification is what separates a marketing claim from a verified fact — a third party has inspected the process and put their name to it. That’s the difference between “trust us” and “check for yourself”.
Why we chose it
For a product that sits in a halal-conscious home every single day, we didn’t want any ambiguity. HMC certification means you don’t have to take our word for it. Learn more about what makes cat food halal in the first place, or read why halal matters to us.
