What Makes Cat Food Halal? A Plain-English Guide
If you keep a halal home, you’ve probably wondered whether it should extend to your cat’s food too. The short answer for many Muslim families is yes — and the good news is that halal pet food is increasingly easy to find in the UK. But what does “halal” actually mean once it’s in the bag?
1. The source of the meat
The heart of halal is how animals are raised and slaughtered. For meat to be halal it must come from a permitted (halal) animal, slaughtered by a Muslim with the name of Allah invoked, and drained of blood. Pork and its derivatives are never permitted. Good halal cat food uses named meat and fish from these controlled sources rather than vague “meat and animal derivatives”.
2. The full ingredient list
Halal isn’t only about meat. Additives, flavourings and even some supplements can contain alcohol or pork-derived gelatine. Genuinely halal recipes avoid these entirely. It’s one reason halal food often happens to be cleaner overall — fewer mystery additives, more recognisable ingredients. We dig into this in how to read a cat food label.
3. No cross-contamination
A recipe can use halal ingredients and still fall short if it’s produced on the same line as non-halal products without proper cleaning. Trustworthy manufacturers separate production and document it — which is exactly what independent certification checks.
4. Independent certification
This is the part that turns a claim into a guarantee. In the UK, HMC certification is among the most respected, because it monitors the whole chain rather than relying on a company’s word. When you see HMC, someone independent has verified it.
Does halal mean better quality?
Not automatically — but in practice the two often travel together. Because halal recipes have to be careful about every ingredient, they tend to skip the cheap fillers and artificial extras. Our own recipes are grain free and high in protein precisely because we started from “what’s genuinely good for a cat”.
