Bathroom renovation guide
Updated October 2026

Bathrooms are small rooms with a lot of trades in them: plumbing, electrics, tiling, plastering and joinery. Getting the order and the details right matters.
Refit, shower room or wet room?
- Like-for-like refit: new suite in the same positions, the most cost-effective
- Shower room: swapping the bath for a large walk-in shower, popular in smaller homes
- Wet room: a fully waterproofed, level-access floor, great for accessibility but needs careful tanking
Things not to skimp on
- Waterproofing behind tiles in wet areas
- Ventilation: an extractor fan helps stop condensation and mould
- Electrics: bathroom electrical work must meet the zone rules and be done by a qualified electrician
How long it takes
Many bathroom refits take around one to two weeks. Ask how long you'll be without a working toilet and plan accordingly.
