Laminate

Affordable and hard-wearing, with a wide range of wood-effect designs. Not ideal for bathrooms unless rated for wet areas.

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT)

Warm, quiet and water-resistant, so it suits kitchens and bathrooms. Click-fit LVT is a popular DIY choice.

Engineered wood

A real wood top layer on a stable core, so it copes better with heat and humidity than solid wood. Works well with underfloor heating.

Tiles

Porcelain and ceramic tiles are very durable and easy to clean, but cold underfoot without underfloor heating.

Carpet

Warm and comfortable for bedrooms and living rooms, with plenty of price points.

Fitting

The subfloor must be flat and dry. Allow for underlay, trims, door bars and possibly trimming doors. Let wood and laminate acclimatise in the room before fitting.

Underlay, adhesives and flooring tools are available from merchants like Travis Perkins.
