Tie-Break Disputes Without a Log: Why You'll Lose the Appeal

4pm. A coach files a formal protest over the bronze-medal tie-break. You are asked for the scoring log — the per-judge, per-second record of points awarded in the golden point round. You do not have one. You have a final score and four people's memories. You are about to lose the appeal.

The protest is coming — plan accordingly

At every sizeable event, expect one formal protest. Usually on a tie-break, sometimes on a gamjeom, occasionally on a weigh-in. Your options are binary: produce the audit log, or lose. There is no middle ground.

What a real audit log contains

• Timestamp of every point awarded, to the second.
• Which judge awarded it (J1, J2, J3).
• Which fighter received it.
• Any gamjeom with reason code.
• The state of the clock when the point was awarded.
• Any undo actions — with who pressed undo and when.

A spreadsheet cannot produce any of this. A paper sheet cannot either. Only a proper live scoring system can.

Why this matters for tie-breaks

Tie-break rules typically cascade: golden point, then judge preference, then last gamjeom, then last valid point. Without a log you cannot answer "who scored the last valid point" — so you cannot apply the rule. The coach knows this. They filed the appeal specifically because they know you cannot prove it.

The immediate consequence of no log

You either:

1. Make a ruling and face a further appeal to the federation.
2. Overturn the original result to avoid escalation — which destroys trust with the winning fighter.
3. Re-fight the match — which is rarely allowed and often causes its own storm.

All three options are worse than the one you don't have: "here is the log, the ruling stands."

The one-line fix
