Travelling with young children is easier in Malaysia than many people expect. Here is how to plan it so the whole family enjoys it.
Step 1: Pick a base and do day trips
Moving hotels every night is tiring with small children. Choose two or three bases, such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Langkawi, and take day trips from each.
Step 2: Choose family-friendly places
- Kuala Lumpur: KLCC Park and the aquarium, the bird park and the butterfly park.
- Penang: the beaches at Batu Ferringhi and the Tropical Spice Garden.
- Langkawi: shallow beaches and the cable car.
- Borneo: orang-utan rehabilitation centres.
Step 3: Handle the heat
Plan outdoor activities for the morning, rest in the afternoon, use high-factor sun cream, hats, plenty of water and light clothes. Malls are cool and have play areas.
Step 4: Eating with children
Plain rice, noodles, grilled chicken, satay without strong sauce, fruit and roti canai suit most children. Ask for dishes less spicy ("tak pedas").
Step 5: Health and safety
Check TravelHealthPro and speak to your GP or travel clinic about vaccinations and mosquito protection for your child's age. Use insect repellent suitable for children, and carry a basic first-aid kit and your insurance details.
Step 6: Getting around
Grab cars are easy, but check whether child seats are available since they are not always provided; bring a lightweight travel seat if you can. See flying with a baby for the flight.
Details change. Confirm with the official source or provider before you book or travel.
