In this guide
A 13-hour flight is easier for everyone, including older relatives and anyone with limited mobility, when the help is arranged before the day. This guide walks through the order to do it in.
- Wheelchair or buggy help at the airport
- Help to board and reach your seat
- Help with baggage claim and arrivals
- A seat that suits your needs, such as an aisle seat
- Any medical equipment, medication and documents
1Tell the airline when you book
Add your assistance request to the booking if there is an option, or contact the airline soon afterwards. The earlier you ask, the more likely the help is in place, and many airlines ask for notice of a day or two at least. Check the current deadline in your booking.
2Be specific
Say what you can and cannot do, such as walk short distances but not long ones, manage stairs or need to stay in a wheelchair until the seat. Specific information gets the right help.

3Plan the airport legs
- At Heathrow, assistance is arranged through your airline, and you usually meet staff at a designated point. See the Heathrow guide.
- At Kuala Lumpur airport, help is provided on arrival; allow time for immigration and bags. See the KLIA guide.
4Think about getting there
A pre-booked car with room for a wheelchair and luggage can make the Heathrow leg much easier. From Yorkshire you can send a free enquiry for a Dewsbury to Heathrow taxi quote. Ask the operator about vehicle space.
5Book a comfortable first night
After a long flight, choose a hotel with lifts and a step-free entrance. See where to stay in Kuala Lumpur.
Details change. Confirm with the airline, hotel or official source before you book or travel.
