Ramadan clear-out: dealing with a year's worth of old Qurans before the month begins
Most masajid already do some kind of pre-Ramadan preparation — a deep clean of the prayer hall, sorting the Taraweeh rota, making room for the extra footfall. It's also, in our experience, the single best-timed moment to finally clear the storeroom of accumulated old Qurans, worn madrasa workbooks, and years of donated religious material that's been quietly piling up.
Why this window works
- The committee is already meeting to plan Ramadan logistics, so approving a clear-out doesn't need a separate agenda item.
- Volunteers are already mobilised for the general clean, so recruiting a few extra hands for sorting is easy.
- You free up storage space right before the month that generates the most donations, gifts, and foot traffic of the year.
- A Friday announcement lands well in the run-up to Ramadan — the community is already primed to think about preparing for the month.
Timing it
Aim to have the clear-out done 4–6 weeks before Ramadan starts, not during the final week. That gives enough time to announce it, collect items from the community, sort what's reusable from what needs burial, and arrange the parcel or pallet — without it competing for volunteer time against Taraweeh setup and iftar planning.
