Booking an MOT near you

Updated October 2026
In Great Britain, most cars need their first MOT when they're three years old, then every year after that. Driving without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000, and it can invalidate your insurance.
When is my MOT due?
Check your car's MOT due date and full MOT history for free on GOV.UK using the registration number. You can also sign up there for a free text or email reminder.
How early can I book?
You can have the MOT done up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. For example, if it runs out on 15 May, the earliest date to test and keep the same renewal date is 16 April.
How much does an MOT cost?
The government sets a maximum fee for a car MOT, and many garages charge less. Check the current maximum on GOV.UK, and compare local garages: price, reviews and whether they'll fix minor faults during the test.
Choosing a test centre
- Look for the blue sign with three white triangles: only approved centres can do MOTs
- Some centres only test and don't do repairs, so there's no incentive to fail your car
- Ask whether they'll do small fixes like bulbs or wiper blades on the spot
Before you go
Many fails are simple things: a blown bulb, worn wipers, an empty screenwash bottle or a warning light. Run through our MOT checklist first.
Parts you'll need
Order online for delivery, or click and collect from a local GSF branch, often within the hour.
If your car fails
You'll get a list of dangerous, major and minor defects. You can't drive with a dangerous defect. If your old MOT is still valid you may drive to have major defects repaired, but check the GOV.UK guidance first. If repairs are needed, send an enquiry and we'll pass it to an independent local mechanic.
Need help?
