Reliability varies more between individual models and engines than between brands, but some patterns show up year after year in large UK owner surveys, such as the What Car? Reliability Survey and Which? car surveys. Always check the latest results for the exact model and engine you're considering.
Brands that usually rank well
- Toyota and Lexus: regularly near the top of owner surveys, especially their hybrids, which have fewer wear parts (no clutch, less brake wear)
- Honda and Mazda: well regarded for engines and build quality
- Kia and Hyundai: strong reliability scores, backed by long manufacturer warranties (Kia's is seven years on new cars)
- Suzuki and Skoda: often score well, with simpler and cheaper-to-fix cars
Brands that can cost more to keep running
Premium and complex cars, including some models from Land Rover, Jaguar and certain German premium brands, have tended to rank lower in owner surveys and cost more to repair, mainly because of electronics, air suspension and expensive parts. Many examples are trouble-free, but budget for higher servicing and repair costs, and consider an extended warranty on an older premium car.
What really makes a car reliable
- Service history: regular oil and filter changes matter more than the badge
- Engine type: some engines within a brand are far better than others; research the specific engine
- Simplicity: fewer gadgets means fewer things to go wrong
- How it's been driven: lots of short trips are hard on diesels and their DPF filters
Free checks before buying a used car
- MOT history on GOV.UK: every past test, mileage and advisory, free with the registration
- Safety recalls: check GOV.UK for outstanding recalls on the make and model
- Service book and receipts: look for regular servicing and cambelt changes when due
- A pre-purchase inspection from an independent mechanic if you're unsure
Keeping any car reliable
Servicing on time with the right oil and filters is the cheapest way to avoid big bills.
