Brakes are the most important safety system on your car. Pads wear gradually, so the signs are easy to miss.

Six warning signs

  1. Squealing when you brake (many pads have a wear indicator that squeals)
  2. Grinding: metal on metal, get it checked straight away
  3. A brake pad warning light
  4. Longer stopping distances or a soft pedal
  5. Pulling to one side when braking
  6. Vibration through the pedal, often warped discs

DIY or mechanic?

Changing pads is within reach of experienced home mechanics, but mistakes are dangerous. For most drivers, a garage is the right choice. You can still buy parts yourself and ask whether the garage will fit them.

Parts you'll need

Order online for delivery, or click and collect from a local GSF branch, often within the hour.

Pads and discs together?

Discs wear too. If they're scored, lipped or below minimum thickness, they're replaced with the pads, always in pairs on the same axle.
