Cat Treats: How to Treat Your Cat Without the Guilt
Treats are one of the best ways to bond with your cat and reward good behaviour. But they’re also an easy route to a fussy or overweight cat if you overdo it. Here’s how to get the balance right.
The 10% rule
A simple guideline: treats should make up no more than around 10% of your cat’s daily calories. The rest should come from a complete, balanced food. Remember to count treats toward the daily total, as we cover in how much to feed your cat.
Why moderation matters
- Weight: treats are calorie-dense and add up fast — see feline obesity.
- Fussiness: too many treats can put a cat off proper meals; more in fussy eaters.
- Teeth: sugary or sticky treats aren’t kind to dental health.
Smarter treating
- Use small pieces — cats don’t need much to feel rewarded.
- Choose quality treats with named ingredients, ideally halal.
- Try non-food rewards too: play, fuss and attention.
- Use treats purposefully — for training, nail trims or vet visits.
Quality should run through everything your cat eats, treats included. Keeping a halal home? See halal cat treats: what to look for. Register your interest to hear what we launch next.
