How Much Should I Feed My Cat? A UK Owner’s Guide

Ask ten cat owners how much to feed and you’ll get ten answers. The truth is it depends on your cat — but there are sensible starting points, and avoiding overfeeding matters, because feline obesity is on the rise in the UK.

Start with weight and activity

As a rough guide, an average 4kg adult cat needs around 40–60g of a quality dry food per day. A lean, very active cat sits at the higher end; an older, indoor cat at the lower end. Always check the feeding guide on the pack, since calorie density varies between foods.

Split it into meals

Cats are natural grazers, so two (or more) smaller meals a day usually suit them better than one big bowl. It also helps you spot quickly if your cat goes off their food.

Use the “body condition” check

Forget the number on the bag for a moment and look at your cat. You should be able to feel their ribs without pressing hard, and see a slight waist from above. If not, adjust portions gradually over a couple of weeks.

Don’t forget water

Dry food is convenient and great for dental health, but make sure fresh water is always available — especially important if your cat eats mostly kibble. We compare the options in wet vs dry cat food.

Adjust through life

Kittens, adults and seniors have different needs — see feeding through life stages. And whenever you change food, do it slowly using our switching guide.

Our 1.8kg bags are sized at roughly a month’s supply for an average adult cat. See the range or register your interest.
