Kittens’ First Food: A Weaning and Feeding Guide

Those first weeks shape a kitten’s health for life, and food is at the heart of it. Here’s a simple guide to feeding a kitten from weaning to their first adult meals.

Weaning (around 4–8 weeks)

Kittens start to move from their mother’s milk to solid food at about four weeks. Begin with a soft, moistened kitten food or a wet kitten recipe, offered little and often, gradually reducing the moisture as they get the hang of it. By around eight weeks most kittens are eating solids confidently.

How much and how often

Kittens have tiny stomachs and huge energy needs, so feed small portions three to four times a day. Always follow the pack’s guide for their age and weight, and keep fresh water available.

What to feed

Choose a food formulated for growth — kittens need more protein and energy than adults, as we explain in feeding through life stages. Quality animal protein and taurine are especially important while they’re developing. In a halal household? See halal kitten food.

Moving to adult food

Around 12 months, kittens transition to an adult recipe. Do it gradually using the 7-day switch to avoid tummy upsets. Our recipes are formulated for healthy adult cats, so they’re a natural next step once your kitten grows up.

Get the basics right

Consistent mealtimes, fresh water, and gentle handling around food all build good habits. There’s a full checklist in bringing home a new kitten.
