Taurine in Cat Food: Why This Amino Acid Is Essential
Taurine doesn’t get much attention on the front of the bag, but it’s one of the most important nutrients in your cat’s diet. Here’s why.
What taurine does
Taurine is an amino acid essential for a cat’s heart function, vision, digestion and immune health. A serious deficiency can lead to heart disease and even blindness.
Why cats need it from food
Unlike many animals, cats can’t produce enough taurine themselves — they must get it from their diet, and it’s found almost entirely in animal tissue. This is a big part of why cats are obligate carnivores and need real animal protein, not plant-based padding.
Making sure your cat gets enough
- Choose a complete cat food — it’s formulated to provide adequate taurine.
- Favour recipes built on named meat and fish; check the label.
- Be cautious with home-made or vegetarian diets, which can fall short.
In our recipes
Because our food leads with real meat and fish and is a complete diet for adult cats, taurine is covered as part of a meat-rich, balanced recipe. Compare chicken and tuna, or register your interest.
