Grain-Free Cat Food: Benefits, Myths and What to Look For

Grain-free cat food has become one of the biggest trends in UK pet shops. But like any trend, there’s some sense and some hype mixed together. Let’s separate them.

Why grain ends up in cat food

Cats are obligate carnivores — they’re built to get energy from meat, not cereals. Grain (and especially wheat and soya) often appears in cheaper foods because it’s an inexpensive way to bulk out a bag. It isn’t toxic, but it’s not what a cat would naturally choose.

The real benefits of going grain-free

  • Fewer common allergens. Wheat and soya are among the more frequent dietary triggers. Removing them helps some sensitive cats — see food allergies in cats.
  • More room for protein. Less filler usually means a higher proportion of meat and fish.
  • Gentler digestion for cats that don’t tolerate cereal fillers well.

The myths

Grain-free isn’t automatically “low carb” — some recipes simply swap grain for lots of potato or pulses. The smarter question is what replaces the grain. We use measured amounts of tapioca, pea starch and sweet potato for steady energy, not as cheap bulk.

What to look for instead

Don’t buy on the “grain-free” badge alone. Check that a named meat or fish is the first ingredient, that protein is high (ours is 35%), and that there are no artificial additives. Our chicken and tuna recipes are grain, wheat and soya free by design.

Other grain-free brands to compare

If a halal-certified recipe isn’t a must for your household, AATU makes grain-free cat food with a high meat content and short ingredient lists. Check the label against the points above before you buy.
