How to choose a trustworthy locksmith
Updated October 2026
Anyone can call themselves a locksmith in the UK. These checks help you pick a good one.
- Get the full price up front: call-out, labour and parts. Ask them to confirm it by text.
- Check where they're based: a truly local locksmith should arrive quickly and know the area.
- Ask about non-destructive entry: drilling the lock should be a last resort.
- Look for vetting: members of the Master Locksmiths Association are inspected and checked.
- Ask for an invoice showing the business name and what was fitted.
Warning signs
Be careful of a very low phone price that rises sharply on arrival, pressure to drill straight away, or refusal to give a written receipt. If you feel pressured, you can say no. Citizens Advice can help if something goes wrong.
