Locked out of your house: what to do
Updated October 2026

First, check the simple things
- Is there a back door, patio door or window that is unlocked? Don't climb or force anything that could hurt you or damage the frame.
- Does a family member, flatmate, neighbour or your landlord have a spare key?
- If you rent, your letting agent may have a key or an emergency number.
If there's a risk to someone
If a child or vulnerable person is alone inside, or something has been left on the cooker, call 999.
Calling a locksmith
Tell the locksmith what type of door it is (uPVC, composite, wooden) and whether it's on the latch or fully locked with a key. Ask for the total price before they set off. Expect to show proof that you live there, such as ID with the address, a bill or your tenancy agreement, once you are inside.
Avoid it happening again
Leave a spare key with someone you trust, or use a key safe that meets a recognised security standard. On uPVC doors, get into the habit of lifting the handle and locking with the key each time you leave.
