What a locksmith can help with
- Lockouts: getting you back in, usually without damaging the lock
- Lost or stolen keys: changing the locks so old keys no longer work
- uPVC and composite doors: repairing or replacing the multi-point locking mechanism
- Security upgrades: anti-snap cylinders, window locks and locks that meet insurance requirements
- After a break-in: making the property secure the same day
Avoiding a bad experience
The locksmith trade isn't regulated by law in the UK, so it's worth agreeing a price before anyone starts. Ask for the call-out charge, the labour cost and the price of any parts, and ask them to confirm it by text. A good locksmith will try to open a door without drilling the lock whenever possible, and will tell you if a lock really has to be replaced.
Look for membership of a trade body such as the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), which vets its members, and keep your receipt in case your home insurance covers the cost.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an emergency locksmith cost?
Prices vary by area, time of day and the type of lock. Evenings, nights and weekends usually cost more. Always agree the full price, including parts, before work starts.
Will the locksmith need to drill my lock?
Not usually. Most doors can be opened without damage. Some high-security locks, or broken mechanisms, may need drilling. A good locksmith will explain why before doing it.
Should I change my locks after moving house?
Yes. You don't know how many copies of the keys exist. Changing the cylinder on a uPVC or composite door is usually quick and low-cost.
Does home insurance cover lockouts?
Some policies, or home emergency cover add-ons, include lockouts and lost keys. Check your policy and keep the receipt.
Is this service free to use?
Yes. Sending an enquiry is free and there is no obligation to go ahead.
