Lost or stolen keys: what to do
Updated October 2026
Lost keys without an address
If you've lost keys with nothing to link them to your home, the risk is lower. Many people still change the cylinder for peace of mind.
Keys stolen with ID or an address
If your bag or wallet was stolen with keys and anything showing your address, change the locks as soon as you can. Report the theft to the police and get a crime reference number, which your insurer may ask for.
Moving into a new home
Previous owners, tenants, builders and agents may all have had keys. Changing the locks on moving day is one of the simplest ways to protect your new home.
Rekey or replace?
On uPVC and composite doors, the locksmith replaces only the cylinder, which is quick. On wooden doors with mortice locks, the lock may be rekeyed or replaced. If you rent, speak to your landlord before changing locks.
