How often should you groom your dog?
Updated October 2026

By coat type
- Short, smooth coats (Labrador, Staffie): a groom every few months, brushing weekly at home
- Double coats (Husky, German Shepherd): deshedding every 8 to 12 weeks, more during moulting
- Continuously growing coats (Poodle, Cockapoo, Shih Tzu): a clip every 4 to 8 weeks
- Wire coats (many terriers): hand stripping every 8 to 12 weeks
What a groom usually includes
A bath, drying, brushing out, a clip or trim, nail clipping, ear cleaning and a hygiene trim. Ask what's included and whether there's an extra charge for matted coats.
Between visits
Brush regularly, check ears and paws after walks, and get puppies used to handling and the sound of clippers early.
Finding a groomer
Look for a clean salon, ask about qualifications and insurance, and check reviews. Nervous dogs may do better with a one-to-one groomer or a mobile grooming van.
