Updated October 2026

What to buy
- Puppy food (continue what the breeder used, then change slowly)
- Bowls, a crate and a comfortable bed
- Collar with ID tag, lead and harness
- Chew toys for teething
- Poo bags and puppy pads
Food
Choose a complete puppy food suited to your dog's expected adult size. Grain-free brands such as AATU are popular, but grain-free isn't automatically better: choose what suits your puppy and ask your vet if unsure.
Health and paperwork
- Vaccination course and first vet check
- Microchip: a legal requirement for dogs, with your details kept up to date
- Flea and worm treatment
- Pet insurance, ideally before any health problems appear
Help as they grow
Puppy classes help with socialisation. Many owners book a dog walker for lunchtime visits once vaccinations are complete, and introduce grooming early.
