Pet sitter, home boarding or kennels?
Updated October 2026

Your options
- Pet sitter (home visits): your pet stays at home with its own routine. Ideal for cats and small pets.
- House sitter: someone stays in your home, good for pets who hate being alone.
- Dog home boarding: your dog stays in a carer's home with only a few other dogs.
- Kennels and catteries: purpose-built, staffed facilities, often with more space and set routines.
Licences
Home boarders, kennels and catteries operating as a business in England must hold an animal activity licence from the council, with a star rating. Ask to see it.
Before you go
- Check vaccinations are up to date (kennels and catteries will ask)
- Leave food, medication and written instructions
- Share your vet's details and an emergency contact
- Book early for school holidays and Christmas
