Malaysia Airlines online check-in, seat selection and manage my booking: a simple walkthrough

The short answerUse 'Manage my booking' on the Malaysia Airlines website to view your baggage allowance, choose seats, add baby or special meal requests and check in online when check-in opens. You need your booking reference and surname, and passport details for each traveller. Check-in windows and options change, so confirm them on the airline's site.

Most problems on the day come from things you could have fixed online. This walkthrough shows the order to do it in.

1Open your booking

On the Malaysia Airlines website, use Manage my booking and enter your booking reference and the lead passenger's surname. If you booked through an agent, use the reference they gave you or contact them.

2Check baggage

Look at the baggage allowance for each passenger and each flight, which depends on the fare type. See baggage allowances and fare types.

3Choose your seats

  • Families should choose together or ask for adjoining seats.
  • Travelling with a baby? Ask for a bassinet seat. See the infant rules.
  • Extra-legroom seats may cost extra.

4Add meals and special requests

Special, baby and child meals are normally requested in advance and by the airline's deadline. Add wheelchair or other assistance requests early.

5Check in online

Online check-in opens a set time before departure; check the window on the airline's site. Have passport details ready for every traveller and save your boarding pass on your phone. Remember to complete the arrival card before you fly: see the arrival card guide.

Common mistakes

  • Names that do not match the passport.
  • Leaving baby and meal requests until the airport.
  • Forgetting that each traveller needs their own entry.

Your first night

Book the first night so you can show an address on arrival: where to stay in Kuala Lumpur.

Fares, schedules, baggage and airport details change. Check your booking and the airline before you travel.
