Bringing Home a New Kitten: The First-Week Checklist

Bringing Home a New Kitten: The First-Week Checklist

A new kitten is a joy — and a lot to prepare for. A little organisation before they arrive makes those first days calm for everyone. Here’s your checklist.

The essentials to buy

  • Food — a quality kitten recipe; see kittens’ first food.
  • Bowls — separate, shallow dishes for food and water, kept apart from the litter tray.
  • Litter tray and litter — low-sided so a small kitten can climb in.
  • Bedding — a cosy, quiet spot to feel safe.
  • Carrier — for the journey home and vet trips.
  • Toys and a scratching post — for play and healthy claws.

Settling them in

Start your kitten in one quiet room rather than the whole house. Keep food, water and litter close by, and let them explore at their own pace. Calm, consistent routines help a nervous kitten feel secure.

Feeding and hydration

Stick to small, frequent meals and keep water fresh and available — see keeping your cat hydrated. Sudden food changes upset little tummies, so if you switch foods, do it slowly.

Health basics

Arrange an early vet visit for a check-up, vaccinations, worming and microchipping advice, and ask about neutering timing. Building a relationship with your vet early pays off for life.
