Do You Need Antivirus for Your Small Business? A Plain UK Guide (2026)

Short answer: Windows Defender is a solid baseline, and many tiny businesses are fine with it plus good habits. Paid security software makes sense when you have several devices, staff working remotely or sensitive client data.

When built-in protection is enough

  • One or two devices, all kept up to date
  • No sensitive client data beyond normal invoices
  • Staff who use two-step verification and a password manager

When to pay for a security suite

  • Several PCs, Macs and phones that need managing under one licence
  • You want ransomware protection, safe-browsing and a VPN included
  • Staff browse and download a lot, or work from home
  • Clients ask what protection you use

What to look for

  • Covers every device type you use, not just Windows
  • Ransomware and phishing protection
  • Light on system resources so computers stay fast
  • Easy central management
  • UK support and clear renewal pricing

Kaspersky is one option that covers PCs, Macs and mobiles. One caution: the National Cyber Security Centre has advised UK public-sector and critical-infrastructure organisations to think carefully about software from Russian-based companies, so check your contracts and clients’ requirements first. Most small businesses are not affected, but it is better to know.

VPNs and password managers

Two add-ons are worth considering. A VPN such as NordVPN or Surfshark protects staff on public Wi-Fi and while travelling. A password manager such as NordPass stops password reuse, which is behind many breaches. Neither replaces antivirus, but both are cheap and cover gaps it leaves.

Antivirus is only one layer

It will not save you from a weak password or a convincing invoice scam. Pair it with two-step verification, updates, backups and staff awareness. Our cyber security checklist covers the rest, and for your website specifically see how to secure WordPress.

Quick checklist

  • Check Defender is on and updated, or choose a suite
  • Cover phones and Macs too
  • Turn on automatic updates
  • Back up files somewhere not permanently connected
