GlossaryWhat is a juz?
A juz (plural: ajza) is one of 30 roughly equal parts the Quran is divided into, to make it easier to read and memorise in portions. In Urdu it's called a para or sipara. A juz is about 20 pages of the standard 604-page Madinah mushaf, and reading one a day completes the Quran in a month.
Why the Quran is split into 30
The divisions are for reading and memorising, not part of the revelation's structure. Thirty parts fit a month, so reading one juz a day finishes the Quran in 30 days. It's a popular target in Ramadan.
Smaller divisions
- Hizb: half a juz (60 in total)
- Rub': a quarter of a hizb
- Ruku': a thematic section, marked with an 'ain symbol in South Asian mushafs
Juz 'Amma
The 30th juz, named after its first word ('Amma), contains the short surahs most children learn first. Many children read it as a separate booklet after finishing the Qaidah.
