Most madrasah bags are bought in a hurry — at the mosque shop, the week before term starts. Here's what to check, in order of importance.
1. Does the Quran fit lying flat?
Measure the biggest book your child carries, then add at least 2 cm on each side. A book that has to be squeezed in gets corners bent and pages crumpled. If you're not sure, see what size bag fits a Quran.
2. Is there structure?
A floppy bag lets a heavy Quran fold the rest of the contents around it. Look for a stiff back panel, a flat base or a dedicated sleeve that keeps the mushaf upright and separate from pencils and bottles.
3. Can a child manage the strap?
The strap should adjust enough to wear across the body, with the bag sitting at hip height, not banging on the back of the knees. Wider straps (3 cm or more) spread the weight better than thin cord.
4. Does it close properly?
A flap that covers the full opening keeps out rain on the walk to the mosque. Buckles look smart but are slow for young children; magnetic or press-stud closures under a buckle are easier.
5. What is it made of?

6. How heavy is it empty?
For children under eight, keep the empty bag light — ideally under 1 kg — because the Quran alone can weigh 600 g to 1 kg.
7. What's the price per year?
Divide the price by how many years you expect to use it. A £12 canvas bag replaced every year costs £120 over ten years. A leather bag that lasts the whole decade can cost less in total — and one bag carried from first Qaidah to hifz completion means something to a child.
