Parents' guide

The parent's guide to madrasah

Quick answer

Madrasah is the after-school class, usually at a mosque, where UK Muslim children learn to read the Quran and the basics of Islam, typically for 5 to 10 hours a week. Children start with the Qaidah, move onto the Quran, and some go on to hifz. Parents help most by keeping a short daily practice routine at home, packing the right things, and talking to the teacher early if something isn't working.

This guide brings together everything on this site about madrasah life, from the first day to hifz. Each section links to a more detailed page.

1. What madrasah is

A madrasah (sometimes called a maktab at the beginner level) is a supplementary class run by a mosque or community centre. Most children attend on weekday evenings or at weekends, alongside ordinary school.

2. The learning path

  1. The Qaidah: learning the Arabic letters and how they join. Stuck? See child struggling with the Qaidah.
  2. Juz 'Amma and the Quran: reading from a full mushaf, with tajweed. Rushing? See reading too fast.
  3. The first khatm and Ameen: finishing the Quran for the first time.
  4. Hifz (for some): memorising the whole Quran through sabaq, sabqi and manzil. Forgetting? See child forgetting hifz.

3. Getting started

4. Helping at home

5. When it isn't going well

6. The bag

A child carries their Quran to class several times a week for years, so the bag matters more than it seems. Start with how to choose a madrasah bag.
