GlossaryWhat is a khatm?
A khatm (or khatam) is a complete reading of the Quran from the first surah to the last. People complete a khatm individually, as a group sharing the 30 parts between them, during Ramadan, or to mark an occasion. A child's first khatm is often celebrated with an Ameen.
Individual and group khatms
- Individual: one person reads the whole Quran, often over a month
- Group: the 30 juz are shared out so that, together, the group completes it, sometimes in a single sitting
- Ramadan: many people aim for at least one khatm during the month, and many mosques complete one in taraweeh prayers
A child's first khatm
Finishing the whole Quran for the first time is a big moment for a child, and many families mark it with an Ameen ceremony.

How long does a khatm take?
Reading one juz a day completes a khatm in 30 days. It takes most people roughly 15 to 25 hours of reading in total.
