Leather bag cracked or dried out

Quick fix

Dry, pale or stiff leather has lost its natural oils, usually from heat, sun or never being conditioned. Clean it gently, then work in a leather conditioner in thin layers over a day or two until it softens and the colour deepens. Fine surface cracks often become almost invisible. Deep cracks through the leather can't be reversed, but conditioning stops them spreading.

How to restore it

Wipe off dust and dirt with a barely damp cloth, then let it dry.
Test a conditioner or balm on a hidden area. It will darken the leather slightly.
Apply a thin layer with a soft cloth in small circles, paying attention to creases.
Leave it 20–30 minutes, buff off the excess, and repeat over a day or two if the leather is very dry.
Leave it somewhere cool for 24 hours before using it.

Is it real leather?

If the "cracks" are the surface flaking off to show fabric underneath, it's PU or bonded leather, and conditioner won't help. See bag peeling or flaking.

Condition once or twice a year, keep it away from radiators and direct sun, and dry it naturally after rain. See leather bag care.
