Why is my madrasah bag peeling or flaking?

Quick fix

A bag whose surface peels, flakes or crumbles into small bits is almost always made of PU (polyurethane) "leather" or bonded leather, not real leather. The plastic top coat breaks down with flexing, heat, sweat and age, usually within one to three years. It can't be properly repaired. You can slow it down, but the long-term fix is a bag made of full-grain leather or honest canvas.

Why it happens

PU leather is a thin plastic coating on a fabric backing. Over time the plastic hydrolyses (breaks down with moisture and heat) and cracks away from the fabric.
Bonded leather is shredded leather scraps glued together and coated. The coating peels the same way.
Bags on the floor of warm mosques, near radiators or in hot cars break down faster.

What you can do now

Stop the flakes spreading: gently pick or brush off loose flakes so they don't shed onto books and clothes.
Keep the Quran in a cloth cover, because flakes stick to pages and covers.
Keep the bag away from heat and direct sun.
Paint-on "leather repair" kits can hide small patches, but they won't stop the rest of the surface failing.

Flakes are getting inside the bag or onto the Quran
The backing fabric is showing through across large areas
The straps are peeling, because the strap is usually the next part to split

How to avoid it next time

Look for "full-grain" or "top-grain" on the label, and be wary of "genuine leather", "PU", "vegan leather", "leatherette" or "bonded leather" on a bag meant to last years. A plain canvas bag is also a better choice than fake leather: it wears out honestly instead of disintegrating.

Can you fix a peeling PU leather bag?

Not permanently. Repair paints can hide small patches, but the coating will keep breaking down. Replacing the bag is usually the real fix.

Why is my leather bag crumbling?
