How to clean a madrasah bag

Quick answer

Empty the bag and take the Quran out first. Canvas and nylon bags can usually be hand-washed in cool soapy water and air-dried; spot-clean printed designs rather than soaking them. Leather should only be wiped with a barely damp cloth and then conditioned. Never machine-wash leather or tumble-dry any bag.

First: take everything out

Remove the Quran and any Islamic books and keep them somewhere clean and high while you work.

Canvas or polyester

Shake out crumbs and pencil shavings
Spot-clean marks with a soft brush and mild soap
For a full clean, hand-wash in cool water; check the label before machine-washing
Air-dry, open, away from radiators

Nylon

Wipe with warm soapy water; most marks lift easily. Air-dry.

Stubborn stains

Pen ink (canvas): dab with rubbing alcohol on a cotton bud, then rinse
Pen ink (leather): ask a leather specialist; alcohol can strip colour
Mud: let it dry completely, then brush off
Leaked juice: rinse quickly with cool water before it sets
