ProblemHow to tell if a bag is real leather
Real leather has an irregular grain with small natural marks, rough fibrous edges where it's cut, a leathery (not chemical) smell, and it wrinkles and warms under your thumb. Fake leather has a perfectly uniform pattern, smooth plastic or painted edges, and often a fabric backing you can see inside. Check the label too: "PU", "vegan leather" and "bonded leather" are not real leather in the durable sense.
Six checks
- Look at the grain. Real leather has uneven pores, creases and small marks. A perfectly repeating pattern is printed.
- Look at a cut edge. Real leather shows compressed fibres, or an edge that's been polished or painted. Fake leather shows a plastic layer on woven fabric.
- Look inside. A shiny fabric or mesh backing behind the surface means PU.
- Press it. Real leather wrinkles softly under your thumb and slowly warms up. Plastic stays cool and uniform.
- Smell it. Real leather smells rich and slightly sweet. PU smells of plastic or chemicals.
- Check the price. A "leather" satchel at £15–£25 is almost never full-grain.
What the labels mean

Why it matters for a madrasah bag
A madrasah bag is used several times a week for years. Fake leather usually peels or flakes well before the child finishes the Quran. Our satchel is being made in full-grain leather for exactly this reason.
Questions people also ask
Is "genuine leather" real leather?
Technically yes, but it's a lower grade made from split layers and often coated. It won't last like full-grain leather.
Is PU leather real leather?
No. PU leather is a polyurethane plastic coating on a fabric backing.
