GlossaryWhat is a rehal?
A rehal is a folding, X-shaped book stand used to hold the Quran open while reading, keeping it off the floor. Traditionally carved from a single piece of wood, rehals are found in almost every mosque and madrasah and are a popular gift, often engraved with a name.
Why it's used
Mosque and madrasah classes often sit on the floor. A rehal keeps the mushaf raised and open at the right angle, so the reader's hands are free and the Quran never rests on the ground.
Materials
- Carved wood: the traditional form, often from one interlocking block
- Plastic or acrylic: light and cheap, common in classrooms
- Folding metal or wood desk stands: for reading at a table
Sizes
Match the rehal to the Quran. A large mushaf on a small rehal tips over. Most standard rehals suit A5 to A4-sized Qurans.
